We open with John on a hot Fourth of July night. He's fanning himself with that iconic Niagara Falls souvenir fan—Niagara was the honeymoon destination of the era, so who knows how long he's had that thing—and a pitcher and glass of iced tea are on the table in front of him, only a couple of the ways we'll see the family fighting the heat in this scene. There's a Hotpoint Automatic Electric range behind him. Hotpoint was a popular early electric-range brand, and this whole 1920s scene is about Edison's "electrical servants" filling the home. Rover is there at his feet as always, with his bowl just visible at the edge of this frame.
The year here is pretty clearly 1927, unlike the last scene which was more vague. John says Lindbergh was about to attempt to fly across the Atlantic, which happened in May 1927, The Jazz Singer with Al Jolson opened in October 1927, and Babe Ruth, the unbeatable "new fella" had his 60-homer season in 1927.
John dismisses Lindbergh's attempt with the same confident wrongness that he did the Wright brothers and self-cleaning ovens, a thread that carries through to Uncle Orville's A/C contraption and beyond.
