When World Showcase first opened its gates in October 1982, it featured 9 countries: Mexico, China, Germany, Italy, The American Adventure, Japan, France, the United Kingdom, and Canada. Each was sponsored by one or more native corporations.

The first expansion was just under two years later: the opening of the Morocco Pavilion on September 7, 1984.

So much about this pavilion had been different. It was sponsored by the government of Morocco itself and the king had sent his royal craftsmen to work on it directly. His artisans carved the plaster, designed the paintings, and laid the tile mosaics. The authenticity of every detail was taken into account to make sure that the culture was represented authentically.

In 2020, Disney and the Morocco Tourism Board mutually agreed to end Morocco’s sponsorship of the pavilion, but the details of this original work remain largely unchanged. You can still wander past the gorgeous replica of Fez’s Bab Boujouloud, or Blue Gate, into the narrow old city street behind it and take in the art and shops.

And while it’s beautiful at any time of day, something comes alive in this area at night. The keyhole arches filled with rich colors and stained glass seem to glow from within–where bread bakes in fire ovens and people gather around kebabs and baklava. There’s something especially quiet about this place that chooses a narrow winding path behind a set of arches to the grand, front facing courtyards that most pavilions chose. It’s an easy place to inadvertently miss…but maybe that’s why it’s such a hidden gem for the rest of us. If you've ever stolen a moment of peace here on a busy night, I hope this takes you back to that moment.

  • Inspiration & Ownership

While I’d like to think that Walt would have gotten a kick out of seeing these scenes and details transformed into their own sort of art, I have no ownership of any element of Walt Disney World or the Walt Disney Company and they do not directly endorse these images. The same goes for images from any location outside of Disney as well.
