Japanese Lantern (Collectible Aluminum Print - 8"x12")

As you approach the Japan pavilion, your attention might first be grabbed by the floating torii gate that rises from the waters of World Showcase Lagoon – a replica of the iconic torii at Itsukushima Shrine. Turn toward the pavilion area itself and you’ll find a goju-no-to, or five-story pagoda, inspired by the 8th century pagoda of Horyuji temple in Nara. The five stages represent, in ascending order, the elements from which Buddhists believe all things are created: earth, water, fire, wind, and sky.

Climb the stairs past the goju-no-to and you’ll find yourself meandering through a formal Japanese garden. It’s here that we can settle in and relax amongst the waterfalls and koi–sometimes forgetting that we’re in a theme park at all. We might grab a bite at Katsura Grill, a teahouse modeled after the Katsura imperial villa in the gardens of Kyoto, or just relax for a while and watch the flow of water as these lanterns hang overhead.

It’s a rare treat when we can grab a moment like this in such a busy place–and so, for me, this is an image of internal peace even in the face of external chaos. I know that not 100 feet from where I was standing when I took this photo, the world was bustling.
