The Main Street firehouse in Magic Kingdom opened with the park on October 1, 1971 and bears the early 20th-century Americana theming that anchors all of Main Street. I think for me it’s this theming that makes it such a good backdrop for an overlay of holiday decor this time of year. It’s so quaint and simple and it’s easy to forget that the bit of Christmas bunting isn’t always there.
The sign, Engine Co. 71, is of course a nod to the park’s opening year—its counterpart in Disneyland bears a similar “Engine Co. 55” label that references the opening year of that park.
Walt had a lifelong love and respect for firefighters. His private apartment above the Disneyland firehouse remains one of the most meaningful places in Disney history. A lamp in the window remains always lit in his memory. And while there isn’t an apartment in the firehouse on this coast, I’m glad we paid tribute to it by replicating the building here. Like Walt is somehow watching here, too.
