Patricia and Grandpa are chatting on the other side of the room and dating the scene faster than Grandma’s VR game, as Patricia talks about car phones and Grandpa retorts with a line about “laser discs and high-def TV.” The vocabulary of the scene itself outdates it.
And then we get our best cameo as Grandpa’s “everything is automated these days” is punctuated by a toilet flush and Uncle Orville’s repeated “no privacy at all around this place!” from the 1920s scene. The voice is still Mel Blanc’s, but Mel passed in 1989 and this scene was written around 1993, so his voice is necessarily archival audio.
Patricia’s hoodie (dating to 2022), which you can see in her picture here, reads “Progress Tech School of Urban Planning”—a reference to Progress City. When the Carousel of Progress was at Disneyland, the same building housed the original Progress City model, which you now see here on the Peoplemover. So the daughter of the Progress family is studying to build Walt’s city.
There are also at least four hidden Mickeys in the scene. One is hidden in plain sight in this picture, peeking out from behind the gifts under the tree. Another is out on the other side of the room—the salt grinder on the counter in front of John. The other two are out of view here. A nutcracker on the mantel and, one of my favorites anywhere on property, an abstract piece of art on the dining room wall that is clearly channeling Fantasia.
