In scenes 1-3, the show is a monologue from John to us, the audience, with family members chiming in and engaging with him from different rooms or off stage. In this scene, the fourth wall goes back up again. Everyone is in the room, and they’re talking to each other—not us. Before John was showing us his past. Now we’ve caught up, and we’re just looking in from the outside.
And worth noting too, and probably the only thing that this scene really did get right—we’ve gone open concept. John is no longer front and center while everyone else chimes in from other rooms. Now they’re all together in one open space, and this is the first time we’ve seen them all talking to one another and not only with John. The fourth wall has gone back up, but every other wall has come down.
Sarah has rigged the oven to listen to John’s voice, but it reacts to every number John says. First the deliberate 375 degrees, then 550 and 975 when John remarks on Grandma’s scores on the VR game. And then, “Overload... overload… Bake Mode complete. Enjoy your meal." Another Christmas turkey ruined. Progress changed everything except the usual outcome.
