“The solution comes in, of all places, a garage in California.”

When you read about EPCOT’s development, there’s no question that the Imagineers had a soft spot for Spaceship Earth. And it’s no surprise - even setting aside the fact that they were building the world’s then largest geodesic sphere. Because as stunning a feat of engineering as it was on the outside, perhaps what drew Imagineers in the most was the attraction’s theme: communication. After all, what are Imagineers, first and foremost, if not communicators and storytellers? At its heart, Spaceship Earth is an Imagineer’s origin story.

The attraction has always begun with the first communications between cavemen to hunt and defend themselves against larger threats, and then the recording of knowledge on cave walls. From there, we leap from scene to scene over thousands of years, then hundreds, then tens, as major advancements in human communication come more and more quickly.

When the attraction originally opened with EPCOT in 1982, the garage scene captured here was instead a mainframe computer room - the type once used by large organizations and inaccessible to everyday people. But after the most recent closure in 2007 and reopening in 2008, Dame Judi Dench arrived and so did the age of the personal computer. And so the mainframe computer scene gave way to this garage in Los Altos, California, where an unnamed young person (generally considered to be some amalgamation of Steve Jobs and Steve Woziak without direct reference) shapes the future.

This image, taken at an extremely low aperture to maximize light without a flash in a moving vehicle, brings new details of this carefully crafted scene into focus. I have it hanging where I do my most important work as a reminder that one person, working quietly and diligently, can change the world for the better.

  • Inspiration & Ownership

While I’d like to think that Walt would have gotten a kick out of seeing these scenes and details transformed into their own sort of art, I have no ownership of any element of Walt Disney World or the Walt Disney Company and they do not directly endorse these images. The same goes for images from any location outside of Disney as well.
