We’re staying in EPCOT for another day, and making our way over to the Enoteca Castello, the walk-in wine shop in EPCOT’s Italy Pavilion. The Italy Pavilion as a whole is a mix of Venetian, Florentine and Roman architecture, and this particular building reads as a rustic Tuscan villa.
Enoteca comes from the Greek oinos (wine) and theke (repository or closet), literally a wine store or wine cellar. Castello means castle. So "Enoteca Castello" is roughly "the castle wine cellar”. There's also a real-world wink here—the shop is presented by Banfi Vintners (the Mariani family), whose Italian flagship is Castello Banfi, a restored medieval castle estate in, you guessed it, Tuscany.
The left crest on the building reads In Vino Veritas—Latin for "In wine, there is truth," the old proverb (commonly traced to Pliny the Elder) suggesting wine loosens the tongue toward honesty. Funnily enough, In Vino Veritas was also the name of the wine club at Harvard Law back when I was there. No idea if it’s still a thing.
The right crest evokes the medieval Italian comuni, the free city-republics. The red cross on white is one of the most widespread civic emblems of northern Italy. Genoa, Milan, Bologna, Padua and others all used it. And Libertas (meaning liberty or freedom) was the proud motto emblazoned on the banners of the self-governing medieval communes—most famously Bologna, but also Siena, Lucca and San Marino. Read together, the crest is an homage to the independence of those old Italian city-states.
And lastly, the flag-shaped weathervane at the top, which just so happened to have a dove perched on it for this picture, reads “1933”. I’m extrapolating a meaning here myself…but 1933 just happens to be the year that U.S. Prohibition was repealed. That's the very year that Banfi, the family business that presents this Enoteca, returned to the wine trade after spending the Prohibition years selling mineral water and medicinal bitters to survive.
Incredible how much meaning lies in a single image when you start to dig into it.

Inspiration & Ownership
While I’d like to think that Walt would have gotten a kick out of seeing these scenes and scents transformed into their own sort of art, I have no ownership of any element of Walt Disney World or the Walt Disney Company and they do not directly endorse these images or other products. The same goes for images and other products taken at or inspired by any location outside of Disney.
