This is a piece of the mural that you pass as you enter Spaceship Earth. The mural itself was painted by Claudio Mazzoli, an Italian artist whose work touched countless mediums: illustration, commercials, comics, painting, sculpture, set design, costuming… An appropriate person to work on an attraction originally dedicated to the evolution of communication. He painted this in California at Walt Disney Imagineering’s Tujunga facility, and it was installed in EPCOT before the October 1, 1982 opening day. It’s one of the most visible pieces of original EPCOT Center artwork still in place.
As your eye moves up the piece, you cover tens of thousands of years. At the bottom, you see early humans, fire and spoken story, and cave paintings. Then a nod to Egypt with hieroglyphics and the seated figure with a scroll. Then the robed figure gesturing toward a sailing ship—perhaps our Phoenicians.
Toward the center we hit the reading scholar, and the manuscript and printing press of the Renaissance.
And then, at the top, the operators with headsets, the satellite dish, space station modules, and astronauts, ending with electronics and computer data. Fan lore has identified the "3" in the 2350 on the satellite, which is in a different color, as a subtle hidden Mickey.
I'll resist the urge to call the 42 floating near the top a Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy reference, but a girl can dream.
