These are Asian Glossy Starlings and they live in the aviary section of the Maharaja Jungle Trek at Disney's Animal Kingdom. They’re native to tropical parts of Asia, particularly in the southeast—in fact they’re frequently spotted around shrines, temples, and other human structures, so this setting is especially fitting for them.
They look black at first glance, but closer inspection, especially in the sun, shows that they’re actually iridescent, covered in greens, blues, and purples due to tiny structures in their feathers that reflect the light just so. They’re also social butterflies, forming large flocks that can number in the hundreds, gathering at dusk in raucous choruses.
Their eyes are particularly striking. When they’re younger the color is duller and closer to brown, but as they get older it matures into this bright red color. It’s supposedly a sign of health and vitality to potential mates. The color also helps them to recognize adult members of their own species, and might even startle or confuse predators.
I was walking around with my 100-400mm lens the morning I took this. Zoomed out to around 180mm for this shot, 1/500 seconds, f/6.3, ISO 6400. I thought they were so stunning gathered on this shrine-like birdhouse with the light streaming in through the leaves behind them.
