This is Dakari, the stunning African lion that called Pride Rock at Kilimanjaro Safaris home for a full decade—until last November, when he and Kamari, his female companion, retired to a peaceful conservation haven elsewhere in Florida. (Don't fret...it's an incredible spot accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and exactly the sort of place where I'd want to retire if I was an older lion.)
My favorite thing about him here is how he has his little paws upturned in front of him, like he's ready for a game of catch. Or trying to prove to you that he washed them already.
I took this picture not long before Dakari left Kilimanjaro Safaris. Just one of those days when he was sunning himself on Pride Rock. I cranked my shutter speed up to 1/1250 seconds to deal with the bumpy Safari vehicle. Set my aperture at f/6.3 to get as much light as I could and blur out the background a bit. ISO settled at 640.
I don't think he could take a bad picture in any event, but I hope I did him justice.
