J.M. Barrie, who wrote the original Peter Pan stories and created Tinker Bell, famously noted that she was so small that she could only feel one emotion at a time, fully and intensely, which explains her swings in the stories from adoration to fury. I think we all know what it’s like to feel that overwhelmed, and I’d like to think that here, amongst her flowers, her single emotion is somewhere in the realm of joy.

When I shoot like this in the parks I often want to capture only the subject and allow myself and the viewer to forget the chaos around it. For this reason, the shallower the depth of field the better—I want nothing in focus but her, and for everything else to fall away. With this in mind, even in the bright sunlight I opened my aperture all the way to f/1.2 and dialed back my shutter speed to a lightning fast 1/6400 sec to limit the resulting light. Even with that speed, ISO still settled at 100.
