Single-Day Series: Pirate Life (February 17th)

We started last week with an iconic scene that's also one of my photography holy grails (the shots I take again and again, trying to do them better each time), so let's do it again today.

If you can't smell this picture then you probably aren't my target audience. We all know the feeling of coming around this bend, trying to remember to look up for the picture with everything else that's going on, and then hoping not to get hit with too much water after the downhill and through the ship scene.

Everything about this shot was about capturing light in the darkness. Used my 50mm f/1.2 opened wide, shutter speed dropped to 1/50 sec even though we were moving, and ISO cranked up to an absurd 10000. (Thank goodness for my Sony...) Then edited in Lightroom to soften up the noise and bring the colors out a bit more. You'll find this print to have a soft, dreamy look—almost like a painting, because of the denoising. I actually love this and embrace it when it happens. Hope you do, too.
