We've been hanging out at Animal Kingdom so far this week, so it only seemed fitting to stay there today. While we were there this weekend, I rode Kilimanjaro Safaris with the kids. The animals that were out were very active—it wasn't long before sunset and the cooler December temperatures must have them feeling less sluggish. In fact, the safari trucks kept having to pause for animals in the road.
I snapped a bunch of photos during our ride through, but think this was my favorite. Even though we only see her from behind, I love the composition. I love that we wonder what she's looking at. That the light from golden hour is pouring over the entire image, that she's having a nosh, and that there are a few wildebeest hanging out in the distance. The lines of it are beautiful too. There's a dash of the rule of thirds, a dash of triangles, a hint of golden spiral. (If these sorts of composition tools interest you, let me know. I'm happy to get into that element of photography more around here.)
Saturday was such a nice reminder that you can have a lovely, off-the-cuff day at the parks without a game plan, even with crowd levels as high as they are this time of year. We went pretty spontaneously and just hung out together. Lines were decently long but we just brought our patience and rode Everest and Safaris and Dinosaur, had a snack or two, saw the new Zootopia show. My younger son, who was more willing to get soaked, rode Kali River Rapids with his friend four times in a row since it was practically a walk-on.
Like I said to my older son when he was reading a book in line for Everest, this is exactly what he would have been doing at home, except we were standing up and periodically got to hop on attractions.
In any event, it was a great day, and even though I had a ton of work waiting for me when we got home I'm glad we took the down time together.
Shot this at 50mm, 1/1000 second to cut the light and deal with the moving safari vehicle, f/4.0, ISO 1000.
