The Partners statue debuted at Disneyland in 1993, created by Disney Legend Blaine Gibson. The Walt Disney World version came two years later, in 1995. Both show Walt holding Mickey’s hand, gesturing forward and inviting us in. Identical as they are, though, they feel really different when you’re in front of them.

At Magic Kingdom, the statue stands in front of Cinderella Castle and becomes a part of this big, iconic composition. At Disneyland, it all feels more personal.

Sleeping Beauty Castle feels smaller, closer, and more approachable. The whole scene just has a different emotional scale. It feels less like you’re looking at a monument to Disney and more like you’re standing in Walt’s park—a gentle reminder that this is the one that he actually walked through.

Sleeping Beauty Castle was never meant to overwhelm the park. It was meant to invite you in. As such, the smaller scale of Disneyland doesn’t feel less than. It feels more human and intimate—the beginning of it all.

Taken at 75mm, 1/500 second, f/8.0, ISO 500.
