Single-Day Series: Endless Toil (June 26th)

This scene is so iconic. I’m forever trying to do it better. To drink up more of the available light and capture him more perfectly.

This version looks almost like a Rembrandt painting to me. Leaning into the highlights and the softness of the shadows. I cranked every setting on my camera to get every bit of light and information about the scene as I could—50mm, f/1.2, 1/50 seconds, ISO 40000. I couldn’t have been pushing my camera or lens (or stabilization system) any further than I was. In edits, I straightened out the viewing angle and leaned into the dreaminess that came with the way light and shadow were playing together—if he looks part photograph and part oil painting, then, all things considered with the subject, fine by me.

Anyway, enough waxing on about the photography stuff. I know you might not be here for that. I just love this scene and can practically see his back rising and falling as he snores when I look at it. Figured you probably could too.

It's the kind of thing I want hanging in my office late at night when I'm pushing through on something important.
