We skipped a proper Wild Wednesday last week but are back at it today—with these lovely sable antelopes on safari. The ladies in this picture (as they seem to be, given their horn shape, gentler facial structure and chestnut coloring, not to mention the fact that they're hanging out together) might look to be smiling for the camera...and they do have a famously calm and elegant demeanor. But don't mistake that for meekness. Sable antelope are aggressive when cornered. They're known to stand their ground against predators. Their horns can, in fact, be lethal. Even lions don't take them lightly. Just another reminder not to judge a book by its cover, or strength by first impressions.
Taken at almost 400mm, 1/500 second to account for the powerful zoom and moving truck, f/6.3, ISO 250. Edited gently to soften the greens and bring out their gorgeous coats.
