Single-Day Series: Butterfly Tent (May 28th)

Sort of a relaxed "wild" today. I wanted to do something to recognize the butterfly tent at EPCOT's Flower & Garden Festival, which just ended its run for the season yesterday.

The butterfly tent has always been one of the kids (and my!) favorite parts of the festival. Wandering a larger tented area near Imagination, you can see butterflies at all stages of life. Once they've got their wings and are strong enough to fly, they'll spend their days fluttering around this area, pollinating flowers, and occasionally landing on unsuspecting guests.

We call my younger son the butterfly whisperer because they are always landing on him—his outstretched hands and arms, his back, the top of his head. He loves it.

Here I captured a Zebra Longwing butterfly working on what looks to be a Peregrina flower. You can actually see it dusted in pollen and using its proboscis (a straw-like part of its mouth) to sip nectar from the flower. An action shot if I've ever taken one! I do love this little window into their work.

I needed a quick shutter and lots of focus here. Was using my 100-400mm and zoomed into around 240mm, shutter speed 1/2000 seconds, aperture f/6.3, ISO 3200.
