We’re back on Kilimanjaro Safaris today and spending a little time with this gentle giant. We caught him making a big reach with his trunk to grab a little nosh as we were passing by.
An elephant’s trunk might be among the most sensitive organ of any mammal. Their trunks alone can have as many as 120,000 or more interacting muscles compared to about 650 in the entire human body. They use them to suck up water to drink, to reach for things from far away, to act as snorkels while swimming… they are multi-purpose appendages to say the least. But perhaps they’re most often used to gather food and drink, since elephants can spend up to three-quarters of their day just eating.
Taken on Safari with my 100-400mm set to about 190mm, 1/1250 seconds, f/6.3, ISO 320.
