Single-Day Series: Before the Stampede (January 14th)

The Lion King taught us to fear the Wildebeest’s stampede, but real life looks more like this. Standing shoulder to shoulder in the rain, conserving energy, trusting the group.

No drama. No rush. Just resilient. These animals that migrate upwards of 1,000 miles a year can also be very still.

I took this image awhile back and have always loved it but wasn’t sure how I wanted to present it to you. In the end, I leaned into the painterly effect of these edits. They were a blur in the rain but I loved the composition. In the end I left them in their soft outlines and colors, even adding a canvas-like texture and a bit of grain to the final print. The final result is so calming to me.

I took this on Safari in the middle of a rainstorm. Was shooting (thankfully under the cover of the truck) with my 50mm, 1/250 second, f/2.6, ISO 200.
