through-the-years
A Family Portrait

We've spent the week working our way through each scene of the Carousel of Progress before it closes down after July 5th for its fourth and most comprehensive reimagining since it first opened at the 1964 World's Fair. We'll say goodbye to the 1900s, 1920s, 1940s, and "future" in favor of the 1969 moon landing, Halloween in the 80s, New Year's Eve 1999, and an "out-of-this-world" future.

Based on our poll, we're all more or less in agreement. Half of us are a little heartbroken but understand. A third of us just want to ride one more time. About a fifth are excited and know Walt would approve. And exactly NONE of us are vehemently opposed to the changes. I'd guess we're all some combination of those first three. Walt was a progress man. No way he'd let Carousel of Progress sit in the last century while the world marches on. So why, if we're all on board, are we all a little sad about it, too?

Well, for starters, like anything Disney that we love, this attraction holds memories for all of us. We remember going when we were children and hearing these same stories. We remember taking our own kids before they grew up. We remember the first time we laughed at Patricia thinking she was indecent and the first time the room went dark around us because a fuse blew.

And, while Walt might be the first person to ask why we waited so long to make these upcoming changes, he also touched this version of the attraction, and it's hard to let go of anything that he had his hands on. If he'd lived to be an old man, maybe we wouldn't cling quite so hard. We'd have more of his direct influence on everything in the parks and beyond. We'd have the man himself calling for us to move on. But we lost him young, and the list of still-standing things that he touched is dwindling. Beyond perhaps his apartment over the firehouse in Disneyland, we shouldn't make unchanging shrines to him in the parks. But damn if it isn't hard to lose the attractions he had his hands on.

On that front I'll just say this: Walt didn't create a static thing. He created parks that evolve with time. And so by continuing that evolution, we maintain the spirit of the thing that he built.

And we've touched on the theme of progress being a double-edged sword over the course of the week, and how that sword has gotten sharper over the years. It's funny...so much of the argument for change is that we can't identify with the current scenes because they are from times that predate us. But when I asked earlier in the week which scene was your favorite, you overwhelmingly chose the 1920s Fourth of July scene. We weren't there but it's still our favorite—and I suspect that that's at least in part because it's the last scene that was able to be entirely positive about the role of progress in our lives. Cross-country trains and washday marvels bought us back precious time. Today's technology sometimes feels like it steals it. When we shift into the late 1960s as a starting point, we're firmly in that era for the entirety of the attraction.

None of this is to say that I'm not incredibly excited to see a look back on the times that I lived through represented on the Carousel. Seeing the mid-80s on that stage will be a riot and taking my kids to see it will probably spark so many conversations with them about when I was little. But still...with the phasing out of this version of the attraction we lose a touch of innocence and unbridled optimism.

One last thing about today's image:

When I edit a family's portrait session, I always feel a particular weight—the responsibility to capture them exactly as they are, because that exact family, on that exact day, will never exist again. The kids grow. The light changes. The moment doesn't repeat. I've felt that same weight all week without quite naming it. I spent hours riding last weekend. Seven times with five lenses and hundreds of shots. This was a portrait session. The family just happened to be animatronic, and the day just happened to be sixty years long.

So here they are, all together. And if you look closely at the four rows, you'll see the whole week's story in a single image. They move decade to decade through the century, holiday to holiday through the year, and even warm to cool as the light of the century changes. I'd love to tell you that last part was deliberate. At best it was subconscious.

These were shot with my 14mm at various settings and absolutely wrestled into submission to get them all to occupy the same space.

Thank you all, from the bottom of my heart, for spending the week on this attraction with me.

You can subscribe here (just scroll down a bit) or watch my Instagram (@thousandcirclesimages) for daily listings like this, limited use coupon codes, and other updates.

* * * * * * *

Canvas (various sizes)

Canvas frames are made of FSC® certified wood or, when not available, PEFC or equivalent.

1.6 inch (4 cm) thick frame

Shipped in protective packaging and strong boxes to ensure no damage during transportation.

Mounting kit included.

Estimated domestic delivery 5-8 business days.

* * * * * * *

Collectible Aluminum Prints (8"x12")

Crafted from two white aluminum layers and a black polyethylene compound core in between.
