The tollbooths were closed and I had to enter through the one spot that wasn't coned off. Parking was great since the lot was largely cleared, but from there on out it was just me, my umbrella, and my camera. I made my way through security and into the park and clutched my umbrella in my left hand and my camera in my right, seeing what I could grab and trying (unsuccessfully) not to get absolutely drenched in the process. I managed to keep my head and camera out of the worst of it but by the end my pants, socks, and shoes were so waterlogged that I must have been carrying around an extra 10 pounds.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-slate-node=\"element\" class=\"ck-paragraph\"\u003e\u003cspan data-slate-node=\"text\"\u003e\u003cspan data-slate-leaf=\"true\"\u003e\u003cspan data-slate-string=\"true\"\u003eAll that said, I'd say it was worth it. The park was already fairly quiet because of the storm. I knew before I'd even gotten there from the wait times in the app that not a ton of people were in the park. And on top of that, it was Dapper Day...so many of the people who were there were dressed to the nines—including this anonymous woman making her way down Sunset. Sometime after 9 p.m., when the park officially closed for the night, I grabbed this shot—one of probably 100 that I took on Sunset Boulevard over the course of that hour. I walked around a bit but for the most part just stood on Sunset taking shot after shot, just waiting and hoping for a moment like this.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-slate-node=\"element\" class=\"ck-paragraph\"\u003e\u003cspan data-slate-node=\"text\"\u003e\u003cspan data-slate-leaf=\"true\"\u003e\u003cspan data-slate-string=\"true\"\u003eIt got a fair amount of work in post-processing, removing all distractions but this lone park-goer, enhancing the lights and colors and reflections to bring them more in line with what my eyes saw. I dropped the clarity, too, to make it all look a little more like the dream it felt like in that moment. You can see the pouring rain and the reflections of the Tower of Terror and holiday decorations on the soaked street. For this, I\u003cspan\u003e settled at 35mm to take in the whole landscape. Reduced my shutter speed to 1\/50 sec and opened my aperture to f\/1.4 to get as much light as possible and cranked my ISO all the way up to 5000. Dealt with noise in the resulting image in edits. I usually don't mind the softened, painting-like feel that comes from this process and this was no exception. I remember standing on the Boardwalk late at night after coming back from the parks and watching the kids watch a magic show out in the open air. It was Columbus Day weekend and that perfect Florida weather. I call it room temperature with a breeze. The night was perfect. Everything was happy and comfortable. Good food smells were floating in the air and for the first time in forever everything was just…really nice. Everything seemed okay again.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI remember looking around myself. Not at the rides or characters or anything specific really. Just at the feeling of it all. I remember thinking, much like when I visited New York as a high school student before I ended up in college at Columbia, “I think I could live here.” I guess the rest is history.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI took this picture recently, in the quiet early morning hours. I wasn’t going for anything tack sharp, just the hint of this place that I loved. A wash of color in the background.
